HIEROCLES.
Commentarius in aurea Pythagoreorum carmina [graecae et latinae]. Paris, Nicolas Nivelle, 1583. In-12, fawn calf, ornate spine (17th-century binding). Princeps edition, based on a manuscript in the library of François de La Rochefoucauld-Randan, abbot of Tournus and cardinal. The original Greek text is accompanied by a Latin translation by the Hellenist Jean Courtier (Curterius). A philosopher from the first half of the 5th century, Hierocles was a disciple of Plutarch and founder of the Neoplatonist school in Alexandria. Faded handwriting and wetness on title, small worm hole on edge of about 20 leaves, faint halo at bottom of 4 leaves.
