PITOYABLE HISTORY of Prince Erastus, Son... - Lot 155 - Giquello
PITOYABLE HISTORY of Prince Erastus, Son of Diocletian, Emperor of Rome. Containing several fine examples & notable discourses, no less pleasant & recreational, than useful & profitable. Orléans, Eloy Gibier, 1576. In-16, marbled calf, ornate spine, red title page, red edges (18th century binding). This appears to be the only known copy of this edition printed in Orléans by Éloi Gibier: no occurrence has been found in the major computerized catalogs (CCFr and Worldcat). Title in a woodcut frame, printed in round type. The work is a novelistic adaptation of the Seven Wise Men of Rome, a medieval novel considered to be the Western counterpart to the Thousand and One Nights. The earliest known edition is that of Lyon, 1564, cited by Brunet (III, col. 207). A short-margin copy from the book cabinet of Louis II Phélypeaux de Pontchartrain (1643-1727), a statesman who served as Secretary of the Navy and Chancellor of France (his armorial bookplate, with chancellor's batons, is affixed to the upper flyleaf). Binding restored (hinges, headpieces and corners).
