LA MOTHE LE VAYER (François de). - Lot 165
LA MOTHE LE VAYER (François de). Homilies académiques. Paris, Louis Billaine, 1664. In-12, contemporary soft vellum. First edition. Missing from the BnF's computerized catalog, which holds only the Suite (1665) and the Dernières Homilies académiques (1666). Preceptor to Monsieur, brother of Louis XIV, La Mothe Le Vayer (1588-1672) was one of the leading exponents of philosophical skepticism in 17th-century France. Close to Mademoiselle de Gournay, who bequeathed her library to him, his close friends included Gabriel Naudé, Pierre Gassendi and Élie Diodati, with whom he formed the famous circle of erudite libertines known as the Tétrade.
