Second edition of this famous work, placed on the Index as soon as it appeared. It features a portrait of the author engraved by Saint-Aubin after Cochin, 7 engraved frontispieces after Eisen, and 7 fold-out maps. Published clandestinely from 1770, then condemned by the Paris Parliament, the work met with considerable success. In addition to a history of the exploration and colonization of America, it contains a lively denunciation of slavery and the exploitation of the colonies by the metropolis (cf. En français dans le texte, no. 166). A fine copy in blond calf. Slight foxing, two quires foxed in volume VII. Small paper restoration in the margin of folio D4 and at the corner of folio V1 in Volume VII. Small partial loss at upper head of volume VI, minor rubbing at head of two volumes.
