BINDING. - AULU-GELLE. - Lot 203
BINDING. - AULU-GELLE.
Noctium atticarum libri undeviginti. [Venice], Aldus, s.d. [1515]. In-8, brown morocco, double framed in two gilt filets with fleuron at the corners and gilt motifs in the middle of two sides, the central rectangle adorned with large gilt irons and in the center a horizontal oval-shaped medallion stamped and gilt, spine decorated, brown edges (Venetian binding of the period).
Aldine edition of Aulu-Gelle's Attic Nights, given by Ignatius.
Second printing (Renouard, Aldus, p. 73). From the Grace Whitney Hoff library.
Specimen of a false binding with a horizontal medallion of Apollo and Pegasus, probably executed in the 19th century by Vittorio Villa, one of the two great forgers specializing in this type of binding. While the binding is authentic and of the period, the central plate and probably the large irons surrounding it are later additions.
On the subject of the bindings decorated with the plate featuring Apollo on his chariot and Pegasus on Parnassus, executed for the wealthy Genoese banker and bibliophile Giovanni Battista Grimaldi (circa 1524-1612), see Anthony Hobson's study, Apollo and Pegasus, 1975, and Michel Wittock's article, "À propos des reliures, vraies ou frelatées, au médaillon d'Apollon et Pégase" in Bulletin du bibliophile, 1998, pp. 330-365.
More or less heavy staining in the margins of the sections.
