[1639-1640]. 2 volumes in-folio, fawn calf, Du Seuil decoration, ornate spine, red title page, red speckled edges (Binding of the period). Very rare first edition, printed clandestinely on Sully's private press at his château. It was not widely distributed, and part of the print run was apparently destroyed by the Prince of Bourbon-Condé on publication. The typographical mark on the title page of Volume I features the three V's and the crown in green and red; in Volume II, this mark remains in black. The Memoirs of the Duc de Sully (1559-1641), Henri IV's minister, are an extremely interesting source for the history of Henri IV's reign and the economic reforms carried out under his rule. Old handwritten bookplate on titles. Label of the Raymond Clavreuil bookshop. The last leaf of Volume II, containing the errata, is in facsimile. Some leaves slightly yellowed, small marginal wetness on a few leaves. Yellow wax stain on p. 176 of Volume I. Tear without lack consolidated at bottom of folio KKk4 in Volume II. Spine fully restored (hinges, nerves and headpieces).
