MINERALOGY. - Album of watercolors of fossils from the Adour - Lot 262
MINERALOGY. - Album of watercolors of fossils from the Adour basin. S.l.n.d. [second half of the 19th century]. Album in-4 oblong (approx. 220 x 300 mm), fawn half-calf, smooth spine decorated (modern binding). Album of 22 beautiful plates presenting more than 300 original watercolor drawings of fossils from the Adour basin, between the Pyrenees and the Atlantic Ocean: oysters, mollusks, various shells, plants, fish teeth, etc. Each specimen shown is accompanied by its description. Each specimen shown is accompanied by its scientific name and often the place where it was found: localities include Bos d'Arros (Bosdarros), Orthez, Tarnos, Estialescq and Salies-de-Béarn. These plates are preceded by a sketch of a Carte géologique d'une partie du bassin de l'Adour by J. Delbos 1854, drawn in ink and colored on mounted tracing paper, and are followed by 9 plates of original pencil sketches of landscapes. The plates are not signed, but the date 1875 is written in ink among the captions on one of the watercolors. The map is copied from the one in the geology thesis by Joseph Delbos (1824-1882), geologist and mineralogist from Bordeaux, founder of the Bordeaux Natural History Society: Essai d'une description géologique du bassin de l'Adour (Bordeaux, 1854).
