ALBUM OF ORIGINAL DRAWINGS. S.l.n.d. [c.... - Lot 283 - Giquello
ALBUM OF ORIGINAL DRAWINGS. S.l.n.d. [c. 1913-1915]. Small folio album, modern black half-chagrin. Album of 55 original naive full-page ink and color drawings in oblong format (approx. 295 x 185 mm) on school notebook sheets, depicting landscapes, villages, hotels, houses, bridges, caricatures, a car, a locomotive, and more. The drawings seem to have been made around the time of the First World War, as confirmed by some of the captions dated 1913, 1914 or 1915: Le Bessat on June 15, 1914, Souvenir de 1914-1915 le Kolossal 420 allemand aux Invalides on July 15, 1915, etc. One drawing shows the Holzminden camp in Germany, while another shows a poilu standing sentinel over the immense plain where such furious fighting has just taken place. The atmosphere of this dark period can be felt in many of these drawings, both in the subjects depicted and in the predominant use of black and dark colors. A few drawings, however, are colored in brighter tones. It is not known exactly who the author of these drawings was, or how old he was at the time: thanks to some of the captions noted, we know that his name was Planchet and that he was born in Balbigny in the Haute-Loire, near Riotord. Crack or tear without loss repaired with adhesive to 2 drawings.
