FLAUBERT (Gustave).
Madame Bovary, provincial mores. Paris, Société du livre d'art, 1912. In-4, blue morocco, double gilt border decorated with gilt irons joined by fillets, spandrels to central border, ornate spine, inner gilt border, blue moire lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine, blue half-maroquin folder, slipcase (H. Blanchetière). 52 color etchings by Henri Jourdain in the text, including one on the title. Edition of 150 copies, all on Arches vellum. Occasional heavy foxing. Attached, in a volume similarly bound by E. Maylander, is a model of the edition, mounted on a second proof dated 1911. It bears this printed justification: Exemplaire unique composée par l'illustrateur Henri Jourdain, accompanied by this autograph note from Léopold Carteret: J'ai établi cet ensemble au moment de la succession de mon ami Henri Jourdain dont j'ai été l'éditeur. L. Carteret April 1932. This model contains 98 original drawings by Henri Jourdain. Most of these pen-and-ink drawings are watercolored, while some have two versions, in black and watercolored, and others have two watercolored versions of the same subject. The volume's illustration includes 52 etchings, so this set of 98 original drawings reveals a previously unpublished part of the artist's planned illustration. Some 50 proofs, bons à tirer and black proofs with remarks have been bound in. The edition's paper proofs are sometimes heavily scorched.
