VOLTAIRE - Lot 68
VOLTAIRE Romans et contes. Bouillon, Aux dépens de la Société Typographique, 1778. 3 volumes in-8, marbled calf, triple gilt fillet, ornate smooth spine, red and green titles, gilt edges (contemporary binding). The finest early edition of Voltaire's Romans et contes, illustrated in the first printing with an engraved portrait of Voltaire after Quentin de La Tour, 57 out-of-text figures by Monnet, Marillier and Moreau le jeune, and 13 vignettes by Monnet. A pleasant copy in contemporary calf. Small paper defect in the upper margin of a few leaves in Volume I. Two plates inverted between volumes I and II. The table leaves are bound at the end of the volumes rather than following the titles. Hinges rubbed, one headband nicked.
