"[...] I have been asked to veil certain truths - which are too much steel mirror, - and I will veil them - because it is about you. Your book got me into politics. The Emperor is superior and can understand, but you know the cowards around him! [...]".

Barbey is unwell. He has neglected to reply to his correspondent and does not know when he will be able to receive and meet him for the first time. "The way you spoke of me in a newspaper where I would not have dared to count on sympathy like yours has given me hope that this sympathy will not be merely intellectual, and that the man will add his own to that of the writer. I've kept you waiting, Sir, but I've waited longer than you [...]".
