BARBEY D'AUREVILLY (Jules) - Lot 84
BARBEY D'AUREVILLY (Jules)
Ce qui ne meurt pas. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1884. In-12, dark green half-maroquin with corners, edged with gilt fillet, spine decorated, the caissons decorated with a red listel set with a double silver and gold fillet, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine, slipcase (Devauchelle).
First edition.
Barbey's first novel, written in 1835 and originally entitled Germaine, unfolds a frenzied story of incest and adultery, mixed with homosexuality, suspicions of necrophilia and matricide, so that the text can be read as a condensed, sometimes clumsy, account of all Aurevillian fantasies (2015 edition by Marie-Françoise Melmoux-Montaubin).
The text first appeared as a serial in Gil Blas in 1883.
A very fine copy, perfectly established by Roger Devauchelle.
