BARBEY D'AUREVILLY (Jules) - Lot 102
BARBEY D'AUREVILLY (Jules) Laocoon: A forgotten Rhyme translated into English verse from the French of J. Barbey d'Aurevilly by H. M. Carey. Caen, B. Mancel, 1857. Small square in-12, paperback, ochre half-chagrin folder with gold titling on spine and modern slipcase. First edition. Prose poem by Barbey, with a facing English verse translation by Madame Carey de Rozel, who has put her woman's hand, with bold grace, on this rough bronze of the Laocoon (Trebutien, preface). Featured in the exhibition organized for the centenary of the writer's death at the Bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris in 1989 (cf. cat. Barbey d'Aurevilly, n°60). Spine of front cover rebacked, pale halo on edge of title.
