BARBEY D'AUREVILLY (Jules) Prophets of the past. Paris, Louis Hervé, 1861. Small square in-12, long-grained black morocco, gilt frame with double fillet and four corner irons joined by single fillet, richly decorated smooth spine, interior lace, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine (Devauchelle). First edition, dedicated to Baroness Almaury de Maistre, of these portraits of four "prophets of the past": Joseph de Maistre, Bonald, Chateaubriand and Lamennais. It was printed in small numbers by Trebutien, whom the author thanks in his preface: A friend, a Catholic and royalist in my own way, a man of the Middle Ages lost in the 19th century, M. G.-S. Trebutien, whose name I am pleased to intertwine with my own, thought it would be a good idea to publish my recklessness, and he became my publisher. A very fine copy
