Russian school of the 18th century, circa 1759 Portrait of Grand Duke Paul Petrovich of Russia (1754-1801), future Tsar Paul I, wearing the insignia of Knight of Saint Andrew and Saint Alexander Nevsky Oil on canvas. Reverse side inscribed "1759 Port...". The 4-year-old son of Empress Catherine II and Czar Peter III of Russia is depicted half-body, three-quarter left, holding a document in both hands. His brocade jacket is richly embroidered in gold and silver, as is his headdress adorned with diamonds, with a bonnet held by a feathered ribbon. In a blackened wood frame imitating tortoiseshell. 59 x 46 cm L. 78 cm - L. 56 cm (Frame) Related works : Several versions of this portrait of young Pavel Petrovich are known, all anonymous, including several in Russia and one in the Hillwood Museum, circa 1758, H. 61 cm (inv. 51.61).
