Makta - Lot 286
Makta
Rhinoceros horn, gold chain
Ottoman Turkey, 18th century
H. 7 cm - L. 2 cm
Weight: 5.6 g
Exotic materials were highly prized for the manufacture of calligraphers' tools, but rhinoceros horn remains a rare material for this type of object, more often made of coral or ivory. This makta, the support on which the qalam pen was placed for sharpening, features an openwork cartouche of plant motifs, which probably also conceals the name of its maker. A set of objects including an ivory makta is preserved in the British Museum (2002,0819.1).
