Provenance: - Collin du Bocage sale, December 9, 2011, lot 40 History: Son of Alexander Kallimachis (1737-1821), hospodar of Moldavia between 1795 and 1799, and Princess Elena Ghica, Scarlat Kallimachis (1773-1821) was appointed Grand Drogman of the Sublime Porte, i.e. interpreter to the government of the Ottoman Empire between 1801 and 1806, before being sent to Moldavia as hospodar, or governor, of Moldavia. He was removed from his post in October 1806 by Russian forces, who took power and held it until 1812. In 1821, Kallimachis was appointed Prince of Wallachia: however, the outbreak of Tudor Vladimirescu's Romanian republican revolution led to his dismissal: a supporter of Greek independence and accused of plotting with the Russians, he was executed for treason along with other Phanariots, including his brother Jean Kallimachis, and shortly followed by his father.
