Enamelled candlestick - Lot 351
Enamelled candlestick Gilded and enameled copper Ottoman Empire or Europe, 19th century H. 29.5 cm Weight : 520g This luxurious candlestick is enameled and gilded in polychrome, turquoise, cobalt, green-white and gold, with friezes of openwork leaves and foliage. Small touches of white enamel imitate pearl friezes. The foot is embellished with leaves in relief all around. Above the foot, a later brass ring has been added to reinforce the central shaft. A number of enamelled objects of this type are known to have been produced in Europe (France or Switzerland) for the Oriental market, but a sherbet service with comparable decoration preserved in the Topkapi Palace Museum suggests that this piece was made in Turkey. See : Catalog of the exhibition Istanbul, the City and the Sultan, De Nieuwe Kerk, 2007, p.128, n°183.
