Bronze censer decorated with scenes from the Life and Passion of Christ. Byzantium, Syria or Palestine, 6th/7th century H. 14 cm - D. 11.2 cm (minor deformations) According to art historians, a number of this type of censer are known to exist in public collections. More than twenty are known to exist, including one in the Brookyn Museum (inv. 42.94), the Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond (inv. 67.27) and the Museo Civico Amedeo Lia, La Spezia (inv. B261). They are made of bronze, and some are produced in several copies from the same mold, with more or less legible decoration. Here, the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Baptism of Christ and Crucifixion can be recognized. Provenance : - Former Dresse de Lébioles collection, Belgium, 1950-1960s Works consulted: - C.
