Saint John of Calvary in gilded bronze, in the round. The young Evangelist, with his abundant curly hair, is dressed in a long tunic and a cloak closed over his chest, a flap of which returns to the front, held in place by his right hand. Beautifully executed. 15th century H. 10.3 cm On a base (minor wear to gilding) This type of representation of the Holy Evangelist seems to have been fashionable in southern Germany. A similar figure in gilded bronze, pendant to a Virgin of Calvary, can be found in the collections of the Cleveland Museum in a slightly smaller size of 9.6 cm (inv. 1943.655).
