Rare carved and engraved walnut and fruitwood book of hours - Lot 49
Rare carved and engraved walnut and fruitwood book of hours (?) box with traces of polychromy. Parallelepipedic in shape, the monoxylous box opens at the top with a sliding lid revealing two compartments; sliding drawer at the bottom; lid decorated with a tree with stylized antlers bearing a circle furnished with the Christian monogram ihs in Gothic letters; inscription around the edge of the beginning of the Ave Maria followed by the owner's name: AVE : MARIA - GRA[TIA] - : PLENA : D[OMI]N[V]S - TECV[M] : F. P. CAPVSY. Circa 1500 H. 6 cm - W. 15 cm - D. 9.4 cm (minor damage and missing parts, notably to the drawer) This is a rare example of an everyday object from the Middle Ages, most of which has never survived. Based on its decoration and inscriptions, this box was probably designed to hold a book of Hours in its lower drawer, and a rosary and perhaps relics in the compartments in the upper part.
