Saint Sebastian in limestone, carved in the round and polych - Lot 52
Saint Sebastian in limestone, carved in the round and polychromed. Standing on his right leg, the other slightly bent; the young martyr's arms are attached by a cord to a trunk against which he is leaning; wide face with slit eyes, well-defined mouth and small, heavy chin, framed by medium-length hair with soft locks ending in a curl; short loincloth tied on his left hip. Burgundy, entourage of Antoine le Moiturier (Avignon, circa 1425 - Paris, after 1497), late 15th century H. 69 cm This depiction of Saint Sebastian gives a peaceful and particularly resigned image of the young centurion martyr. This is in keeping with the tranquil style adopted by Antoine le Moiturier towards the end of his life. In addition to the Burgundian-style facial features and hair, here the cheeks are full and the mouth is delicately drawn. The attitude of the body, the sensitive modeling of the torso and the elegance of the delicately knotted loincloth give the whole a real impression of serenity.
