Sculpted marble skull. Forehead crowned with laurel branches held in place by the zygomatic arches, deep orbital cavities and pierced nasal cavities. 16th century H. 17.5 cm - Total height 23 cm Base (missing lower part) This skull is unusual in that it is crowned with laurel, like the one that adorned the tomb of the heart of Anne de Montmorency (circa 1568-1573), now lost. At the time of the Renaissance, this was a reference to Antiquity, a philosophical symbol of Stoicism, the dead man having triumphed over the trials of life. Book consulted : - G.
