Juno in bronze with dark patina and chasing. The goddess is - Lot 104
Juno in bronze with dark patina and chasing. The goddess is standing, her naked body encircled by a sash, leaning on her right leg, the left bent; her hair is up in a bun surrounded by a braid; she rests her right hand on a breast and her other hand on the head of the peacock accompanying her. Venice, workshop of Girolamo Campagna (1549-1625), late 16th century H. 32 cm Blackened wood base (slight crack to the right leg, minor cast-iron damage) Two other examples of this Juno accompanied by her peacock are known: one passed into the art market a few years ago and another belonging to a Belgian private collection was exhibited at the Château de Laarne in Belgium in 2017 given as South Germany, late 16th century. However, this goddess figure is very similar in style to statuettes attributed to the sculptor Girolamo Campana, who dominated Venetian sculpture between 1590 and his death in 1626. One thinks in particular of a series of statuettes intended to adorn the tops of andirons representing gods of antiquity or allegorical figures.
