Saint Justina is the patroness of the city of Padua. After the victory at Lepanto on October 7, 1571, her feast day, Veronese painted a picture of her martyrdom. Mazarin was subsequently interested in buying the painting, but was unwilling to spend the 10,000 ducats demanded by the monks. The painting is now in the Museo Civico in Padua (inv. 466, fig.).
