Curved plaque depicting the Crucifixion in painted polychrom - Lot 112
Curved plaque depicting the Crucifixion in painted polychrome enamel with gold highlights, salmon-colored counter-enamel in fondant. The Virgin Mary and Saint John stand on either side of the cross, with Mary Magdalene kneeling and wrapping her arms around the stipe, and the city of Jerusalem in the background.
Limoges, attributed to Jean II Reymond (1606-c. 1631), first quarter 17th century
H. 10.5 cm - L. 7.8 cm
Label with collection number on reverse (some restoration, very slight loss).
This Crucifixion can be compared with two small plates of similar workmanship from the Lehman Collection at the Metropolitan of Art (inv. 1975.1.1239 and 1242). It is thought that Jean II Reymond is probably "Jehan Reymon", mentioned in 1606 as the son of Martial II Reymond, who died prematurely before 1629. Few works by this short-lived enameller survive, but they are particularly noteworthy for their precious craftsmanship, employing translucent enamel on silver flakes and gold stippling.
