Yellow cornelian oval cameo depicting Roman Charity. - Lot 116
Yellow cornelian oval cameo depicting Roman Charity. 17th century H. 3.4 cm - L. 2.6 cm The theme of Pero secretly breast-feeding his imprisoned father Cimon is recurrent in art from the Renaissance to the Baroque period. The (inverted) composition of the scene interpreted here can be found in several 17th-century paintings that have come onto the art market in recent years (fig.). It has not yet been possible to identify the engraving on which these versions were based, and from which the lapidary also drew inspiration, given the size of the stone.
