BOSSUET (Jacques-Bénigne). - Lot 20
BOSSUET (Jacques-Bénigne).
De nova quaestione tractatus tres. I. Mystici in tuto. II. Schola in tuto. III. Quietismus redivivus. - Quaestiuncula de actibus a caritate imperatis. Paris, Jean Anisson, 1698. In-8, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, central coat of arms, ornate spine, interior roulette, gilt edges (period binding).
First edition.
Bossuet (1624-1704) wrote this work to allay the fears of theologians in France and Rome who feared that, by condemning the Maximes des Saints, they were undermining the ancient mystical and scholastic authors who had dealt with charity and passive prayer (cf. Bourseaud, Bossuet, p. 132). The Quaestiuncula de actibus a caritate imperatis (13 pages in separate pagination) is an appendix to the author's dissertation.
A morocco copy bearing the arms of Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1664-1743), bishop of Troyes.
Son of Antoine, this prelate bore the same first name as his uncle, the famous orator and bishop of Meaux, whose library he inherited.
Slight marginal dampening to 4 leaves of book A. Restorations to binding (corners, headpieces and three jaws, two of which on the height of a box).
