COMMELYN. Histoire de la Vie & Actes mémorables de Frédéric Henry de Nassau prince d'Orange. Amsterdam, Vefve & Héritiers de Judocus Janssonius, 1656. 2 parts in one small in-folio volume, granite calf, triple gilt fillet, gilt coat of arms in center, ornate spine, red edges (period binding). First edition of the French translation, decorated with an allegorical frontispiece, a portrait of the Prince of Nassau and 34 copper-engraved plates, mostly double-page, depicting maps, city views and naval battle scenes. Relation of events in the history of Holland from 1625 to 1647, the period during which Prince Frederick of Orange-Nassau served the States General of the United Provinces as stathouder. The conquest of northern Brazil plays an important role (Borba de Moraes, t. I, p. 167). Copy with unidentified arms. 2 plates torn but not missing, one double plate a little short in the margins. Some wetness, especially at the bottom of the last quires. Spine restored.
