CORSIER (Jean) and Étienne AUFRÉRI. - Lot 37
CORSIER (Jean) and Étienne AUFRÉRI. Decisiones capelle sedis archiepiscopalis Tholose una cum additionibus. S.l.n.d. [at colophon]: Lyon, Jacques Sacon, October 19, 1503. Gothic folio, half vellum, brown title page, speckled edges (19th century binding). First edition. (Baudrier, t. XII, pp. 316-317.) An important book of jurisprudence, offering information on the judicial and legal life of Toulouse, explaining the procedures in use at the time in ecclesiastical affairs and civil matters such as matrimonial agreements and wills. The Décisions de la chapelle toulousaine is the only true collection of jurisprudence from the late Middle Ages [...]. The Decisions have the particularity of delivering jurisprudence to the Toulouse officialdom at two points in its history (Jean-Louis Gazzaniga, "Droit et pratique : notes sur les décisions de la Chapelle toulousaine" in Cahiers de Fanjeaux, 1994, pp. 321-337). The Decisiones, originally collected by Jean Corsier, official in Toulouse, were enlarged and published by his successor Étienne Aufréri, a jurisconsult from Poitiers who taught law at the University of Toulouse, where he died in 1511. This copy belonged to a jurist of the time by the name of Casanova (handwritten ex-libris Casanova me possedit on the title), with several text underlining and annotations in the margins. Engraved bookplate André Guêze. Paper restoration in the margins of ten leaves, title doubled with reinforced margins. Most annotations slightly damaged by binder's knife. Marginal foxing throughout, with holes and wormholes occasionally deleting letters. Last leaf missing.
