DENYSE (Nicolas). - Lot 41
DENYSE (Nicolas). [Gemma predicantium]. Preclarissimum atque divinum opus quod gemma predicantium nuncupatur cunctis verbi dei proclamatoribus... Printed in Rouen, Martin Morin, s.d. [ca. 1505-1506]. In-4 gothic, 16 ff.n.ch. and 162 ff., cold-stamped brown calf, boards decorated with straight and intersecting fillets with small medallions and fleurons in the compartments so drawn, modern ties, three-ribbed spine (Binding of the period). GW, 7 Sp.372a. - HC, 6094. - Goff, D-140. - Pellechet, 4192. Extremely rare post-incunabula edition of this collection of homilies by Nicolas Denyse, a Norman preacher at the convent of Valognes and then Rouen, who died in 1509. Printed in Rouen by Martin Morin (1490-1523), Rouen's prototypographer. The recent census of the British Library's online catalog of incunabula (ISTC) lists only about fifteen copies in public institutions, including one in the Rouen library, which is indicated as being incomplete with the title. Bound at the end: [LOCHMAIER (Michael)]. Parrochiale curatorum opus... S.l.n.d. [at the end] : Paris, Nicolas de La Barre, 25 avril 1513. 6 ff.n.ch., 89 ff. and 1 f.n.ch. (Moreau, 1513, n°653.) Rare edition of this text by Michael Lochmaier, professor of theology in Vienna, whose original edition appeared in Nuremberg around 1493. It is adorned with 2 large woodcuts, one showing the author offering his book, the other, beautifully crafted, depicting Christ surrounded by five angels. A very attractive volume preserved in its first cold-stamped binding, with reused parchment linings and endpapers from an ancient Latin manuscript. Ex-libris of the Jesuit College of Bruges. From the Arthur Dinaux library (1864, no. 203). Some restorations to binding, notably to headpieces and corners.
