FAVRE (de). - Lot 46
FAVRE (de).
Les Quatre heures de la toilette des dames, erotic poem in four songs. Paris, Jean-François Bastien, 1779. Large in-8, red morocco, triple gilded fillet, green morocco circular piece bordered by a series of eight-pointed gilded irons, smooth spine decorated, gilded edges (period binding).
Beautiful illustration by Le Clerc, engraved in intaglio by Le Roy, Halbou, Patas, Le Grand and Arrivet, including a frontispiece, a vignette with the coat of arms of the Princesse de Lamballe, to whom the work is dedicated, 4 figures and 4 culs-de-lampe.
The cul-de-lampe in the third canto, featuring a feathered head believed to represent that of the Princesse de Lamballe, is particularly curious given the horrific fate of Marie-Antoinette's friend.
A copy in large Hollande paper, in a fresh red morocco binding whose coat of arms has probably been scratched or covered over, probably during the Revolution.
From the library of Baron de Bellet, with engraved armorial bookplate.
