MANUSCRIT. - Sottizier. Manuscript in several hands, 226 leaves. S.l.n.d (ca. 1700-1715). In-folio, ochre half-basin, ornate spine, brown morocco (modern binding). Collection of seditious, anticlerical, gallant and free pieces. In particular, it contains three important extracts from the report of the second voyage of the Amphitrite (the first French ship to dock on the Chinese coast), written by Lieutenant Bouvet de la Touche, one of the ship's officers (Trois extraits tirés d'un journal manuscrit du voiage de la Chine fait dans les années 1701, 1702 et 1703 par l'Amphitrite). Also worthy of note is this list of court characters playing comedy, including the Duke of Burgundy (Eraste from Le Misanthrope), the Duke of Maine (Le Diable boiteux), M. de Villars (Le Matamor from L'Illusion comique), M. Donzi (Don Juan from Le Festin de Pierre), M. de Luxembourg (the cuckold from Molière's L'Ombre), and others. Or this curious Histoire pitoyable et lamentable arrivé à l'endroit d'un nommé Rousseau fils d'un cordonnier, dont le diable a pris possession pour avoir renié son père. First three leaves restored, many leaves stained at the top, sometimes reaching the text.
