First edition.
Fine portrait of Turenne, engraved by Larmessin after Meissonier, large fleuron with Turenne's coat of arms on the titles, 7 large head vignettes and 4 culs-de-lampe by Bonnard engraved by Scotin, and 13 double-page battle plans.
Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, vicomte de Turenne (1611-1675), Marshal of France, in the service of Louis XIII and then Louis XIV, was one of France's greatest men of war. He was killed by a cannonball at the battle of Sasbach.
Copy in blond calf with undetermined arms.
Contemporary handwritten ex-dono on the title of Volume I, Bocquet de Chantrene, and contemporary mention Ex dono comitis d'Evreux.
Yellowed quires in Volume I, staining to a few leaves, soiling to two leaves in Volume II (pp. LXXIV and LXXV of the Mémoires duc d'Yorck). Minor defects to covers, scuffing on one cover.
