Idea theologiae moralis [...]. Editio III. - Idea theologiae speculative [...]. Editio V. Paris, Georges Josse, 1642-1643. 2 volumes in-12, red morocco, boards decorated in the Du Seuil style, spines gilt, gilt edges (period binding).

Born in Auch, Pierre de Saint-Joseph (1594-1662), a member of the Feuillants order, was the author of numerous treatises on theology and philosophy. He was one of the main sources of Anton Wilhelm Amo (c. 1700-1753), the black Enlightenment philosopher and first African to graduate in Europe, for his Treatise on the Art of Soberly and Accurately Philosophizing (1738) (cf. Justin E. Smith in Neglected Classics of Philosophy, vol. II, pp. 124-128).
A very pleasant, fine copy in contemporary morocco.
One hinge slightly marked, small chip restored to a headpiece.
