Large volume in-8, olive basane, cold fillet, large fleur-de-lis gilt at the corners, gilt coat of arms in the center, spine decorated with repeated fleur-de-lis, gilt edges (Binding of the period).
Edition of Suetonius' Lives of the Twelve Caesars, with extensive commentary by the German Protestant philologist and theologian Johannes Schildius.
It features an allegorical title-frontispiece engraved in intaglio by Reinier van Persyn, and 12 medallion portraits in the text.
Fine binding with the coat of arms of Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre.
Suetonius was very popular in France in the 16th and 17th centuries with his biographies of Roman emperors from Julius Caesar to Domitian, who served as models for great French monarchs such as Francis I and Louis XIV.
Some discreet and skilful restoration to binding, spine lightened.
