AZÉMAR and Jean-Guillaume GARNIER. - Lot 152
AZÉMAR and Jean-Guillaume GARNIER. Angle trisection. Followed by Recherches analytiques sur le même sujet. Paris, Courcier, 1809. In-8, long-grained green morocco, framed with a grecque, fillets and vegetal roulette, smooth spine decorated with alternating fillets, small stars, a small crown and a small crowned eagle, inner lace, pink silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges (period binding). First edition, with 3 folding plates. A work on angle trisection, a challenge which consisted in graphically dividing an angle into three equal parts, using only the ruler and compass; algebraic theories demonstrated the impossibility of this operation. The geometric part of this work is by Azémar, from the Ponts et Chaussées office, and the analytical part by mathematician Jean-Guillaume Garnier (Reims 1766-1840), Lagrange's assistant at the École Polytechnique. Elegant contemporary morocco binding. Minor foxing on title and last leaf. Slight rubbing to binding.
