JOUY (Étienne de). - Lot 183
JOUY (Étienne de). Mauritius, or the Isle of France. Current situation of this colony, and documents in support of the inhabitants' claim. Paris, Lacretelle, Plassan, 1820. In-8, modern hardback. Very rare first edition of this work on the history of Mauritius: only one copy listed in the CCFr, located at the BnF. Étienne de Jouy (1764-1846), a former officer in the garrison that defended the island under the command of General Decaen, describes the political situation of this 18th-century French colony, which fell to the English in 1810. Small tear on title, not missing.
