Journal de l'expédition des Portes de fer. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1844. Large in-8, dark blue morocco, triple gilt fillet, large decoration of eight compartments drawn by double fillets and decorated with fleurs-de-lis or olive branches, all arranged around a large poly-lobed compartment in reserve, spine adorned with compartmentalized fleur-de-lis boxes decorated with fleur-de-lis seeds, red morocco lining adorned with wide gilded small-iron lace, fleur-de-lis corners in a cartouche, gilded edges (Chambolle-Duru - Marius Michel doreur).
First edition, printed on wove paper, of one of the finest 19th-century books on the conquest of Algeria.
40 wood-engraved hors-texte figures printed on mounted chine, under a captioned serpente, and numerous vignettes in the text, in the first edition. A fold-out map is included at the end of the volume.
Spectacular, perfect compartmented binding by Chambolle-Duru; also signed by the gilder, Marius Michel (the father).
Another copy of this edition, in a similar binding (unlined) executed by Hippolyte Duru in 1856, was in the Henri Lafond library (2015, no. 130).
Engraved bookplate (glued in the middle of the lining) of Freiherr Maximilian von Goldschmied Rothschild. On verso of title, restitution stamp of the Frankfurt library.
Minor restoration and small dent in center of upper board.
