REVUE. - La Revue Indépendante de littérature et d'art. Nouv - Lot 220
REVUE. - La Revue Indépendante de littérature et d'art. Nouvelle série. Paris, 1886-1888. Together 25 issues in 9 volumes in-8, bradel percaline rouge, smooth spine, brown title page, untrimmed, cover and spine (H. Capelle).
Virtually complete collection of this third series edited by Édouard Dujardin (1861-1949), poet and disciple of Mallarmé. It includes the first 25 issues published from November 1886 to November 1888. The only issue missing is no. 26, published in December 1888.
Under Dujardin's impetus, this important journal became the spearhead of Symbolist poetry. Initially edited by Fénéon from 1884 to 1886, the magazine welcomed such authors as Verlaine, Huysmans, Mallarmé, Laforgue and Villiers de L'Isle-Adam.
One of 100 deluxe copies, printed on various large papers: japon (vol. I), hollande (vol. II), chine (vol. III), vélin du Marais (vol. IV), and various colored papers including papier bleuuté (vol. VI) and papier jonquille (vol. VIII and IX).
These deluxe copies are the only ones illustrated: a total of 31 plates, including 4 studies by James Whistler (in no. 1, here in double state, on japon and chine), an original lithograph by Odilon Redon (no. 6), a drawing by Renoir (no. 11), a lithograph by Paul Signac (no. 15), 4 etchings by Camille Pissarro (nos. 16 to 19), a lithograph by Maximilien Luce (no. 22), a woodcut by Lucien Pissarro (no. 24) and an etching by Jacques-Émile Blanche (no. 25).
Autograph letter from Dujardin to Émile Soldi (1846-1906), sculptor and cameo cutter, Grand Prix de Rome, and art writer.
Enclosed is no. 1, May 1, 1885, a unique and extremely rare issue of the second series (one large in-8 volume, 32 pages). It contains the beginning of an article on Zola by Hennequin, and that of an article by Charles Henry on Le Livre de l'avenir.
From the Paul Muret library.
Some spotting and foxing, small loss to covers. Small tears, stains and holes to last leaf of single issue, with loss of words.
