STERN (Daniel, pseudonym of Marie D'AGOULT). - Lot 230
STERN (Daniel, pseudonym of Marie D'AGOULT).
Nélida. Paris, Amyot, 1846. In-8, glazed green basane, double framed with a gilt fillet and a cold-webbed roulette, spine decorated with gilt fillets and dotted lines, double fillet inside, gilt edges (period binding).
First edition.
Autobiographical novel in which the Countess d'Agoult recounts her passionate and tumultuous affair with Franz Liszt. The central character, Nélida, is an anagram of Daniel, the first name of the pseudonym adopted by the Comtesse d'Agoult for the publication of her writings.
The last page of the volume is occupied by a dedication entitled Envoi. - To my friends. This is followed by a masked evocation of eight characters, the key to which was given by Fernand Vandérem in his Bibliophilie nouvelle, t. III, pp. 313-317, under the heading "livres négligés" ("neglected books").
A fine copy, tastefully bound.
