Michael BUTTERFIELD (1635-1724), English clockmaker, established in Paris in 1663 Engraved 800°/°° silver pocket sundial, octagonal plate with "bird" gnomon; hour scales (43, 46, 49, 52 degrees) are written in alternating Roman and Arabic numerals; the compass under the glass has eight sections, with north indicated by an engraved fleur-de-lis; the engraved reverse shows the names and latitudes of 28 cities, including Paris, London, Turin, Brussels, Bordeaux, Marseille and Toulouse, in an engraved interlace pattern. In a brown leather slipcase with green velvet interior.
