Michael BUTTERFIELD (1635-1724), clockmaker of English origin, settled in Paris from 1663. Gilded and engraved brass pinnacle graphometer, the round compass under glass with an eight-way compass rose, north indicated by an engraved fleur-de-lis, the mobile alidade with two pinnules and limbs engraved with Arabic numerals and floral scrolls, mounted on a fixed plate and a ball-and-socket base allowing it to be tilted vertically, resting on a turned blackened wood base. Good condition Signed "Butterfield à Paris" on the alidade France, Paris, late 17th or early 18th century 23 x 21 x 11 cm
