Rare mahogany and brass whaler octant with pinnules, double reflection, the nonius engraved with degrees in Arabic numerals, flanked on the limb by the date and owner's name "Rÿkmer Pieters 1783", the alidade decorated with engraved plant scrolls. Good condition
Signed and numbered "Jan Cornelisz Fecit a FÖHR N° 240".

- An identical octant designed by Jens Nickelsen in Föhr is in the Dr. Carl Haeberlin Friesen Museum, Germany (inv. 956).
A few rare examples of objects are known from this small island in northern Germany on the border with Denmark, which from the 1730s produced for the Dutch and German whaling community (see "Octants from the Friesian Island of Fohr for Dutch and German Whale Men, 1760-90" by W.F.J. Morzer Bruyns, 2006).
