SAFAVID ART (1501-1722) Circular, engraved and chased brass qibla compass indicating the direction of Mecca, hinged by a small hook; inside, the compass under a four-lobed glass is surmounted by a sundial with Arabic calligraphic numerals; outside the case, on both sides, a radiating inscription gives the names of cities in the Iranian world accompanied by their qibla (direction of prayer) as well as those of other cities in the Islamic world.
