SPANISH school circa 1500 Saint Engracie Reinforced panel 64 x 55 cm Inscription at top S. ENG... (Lifts and restorations) Saint martyr from Saragossa at the time of Diocletian, the great persecutor of Christians. Born into a Christian family at the end of the 3rd century, she left for Narbonne, the most important region of the Empire after Rome, to marry a local nobleman. Arrested at Caesaraugusta, a nail was driven through the middle of her forehead. Her retinue of eighteen were beheaded. Venerated since the 7th century in Catalonia and throughout Spain, she is depicted with a nail in the middle of her forehead.
