Attributed to the MAITRE AUX BÉGUINS (Active circa 1640 - 16 - Lot 109
Attributed to the MAITRE AUX BÉGUINS (Active circa 1640 - 1660) Peasants in front of a farm Canvas 53 x 67 cm Our painting, probably painted in Paris in the 1650s, has long been attributed to Abraham Willemsens. However, it seems that Willemsens (active in Paris around 1665) was more interested in describing objects than depicting peasant figures. The amused, almost droll figure of the peasant offering a glass of wine to the reluctant farmer refers to the art of the Maître aux Béguins, a painter with a conventional name, close to the Le Nain brothers.
