FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1640, entourage of Claude VIGNON - Lot 110
FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1640, entourage of Claude VIGNON The Lute Player Canvas 101 x 76 cm The depiction of women playing the lute is a favorite motif in 17th-century European painting. It can be Caravaggesque (Artemisia Gentileschi, Daret, Honthorst and Ter Brugghen), or bourgeois (Metsu or Ter Borch). The instrument represented here is a novelty, the Baroque lute with its straight head replacing the Renaissance lute whose top was at an angle of almost 90° to the neck. The dance performed is also a novelty: a sarabande invented by the Spanish in the late 16th century. Her pensive air, wide-sleeved habit, jewels and feathered hat indicate the importance of the model represented here. We also note the opening onto the landscape, a happy correspondence between nature and music.
