Miniature Ottoman Koran Ink, pigments and gold on paper, brown leather binding with stamped and gilded floral decoration Turkey, dated 1262 AH / 1845 AD 7.7 x 5.8 x 1.2 cm Provenance : - Old French collection. The current owner's grandparents, teachers at the Lycée Français de Galatasaray (early 20th century), acquired it from an Istanbul-based Swiss dealer (M. Rochat). The 225-page Koran opens with a richly illuminated bifolio. On an entirely gilded background, two calligraphic medallions with blue backgrounds are framed by gold and red cartouches, all set within a geometric frieze. It is followed by a text in fine black and red naskh calligraphy, spread over 17 lines per page within gold framing fillets, and scattered with gold vignettes separating the verses. Sura titles are inscribed in white cursive calligraphy in cartouches on a gold background. Mandorls and illuminated vignettes adorn the margins of certain pages. The Qur'an ends with a colophon illuminated with polychrome and gold floral scrolls on a blue and green background. It is signed by the copyist Ahmad Nasbîb 'an Khawâjkân, with the inscriptions "Diwân Homayûn" and "the followers of the calligrapher Sadri Âli", in the year 1262 AH.
