The first terracotta remains were found on the "Grande Djenné" site around 1943. These terracottas - mostly anthropomorphic - are made from a fine-grained clay whose natural color is red ochre. Once fired, tones range from very pale yellow-beige to dark red, gradations of gray and pink. This anthropomorphic terracotta is distinguished by the quality of its workmanship and attention to detail. Depicted kneeling, arms folded at the sides and hands resting on knees, the figure stands in a hieratic attitude. The body is covered with wave-like snake motifs.
